The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has required that all credit reporting agencies provide for the protection and security of consumers' privacy and identity. As outlined in the FTC's Summary of Rights, this includes the right to opt-out of "prescreened credit offers." To comply with this regulation the three major credit bureaus (Equifax, Experian, and Trans Union) have designated a phone number and a website solely for the purpose of opting out.
