VA Loan Frequently Asked Questions

What is a VA loan?

A VA loan, which stands for Veteran Affairs loan, is a type of veteran home loan designed specifically to offer long-term financing to eligible American veterans or their surviving spouses (provided they do not remarry). This program is aimed at helping veterans secure home loans for veterans with potentially better terms than what might be available through traditional financing options.

What are some VA loan benefits?

The VA loan program is a benefit of military service, offering assistance in purchasing a home with reduced or no down payment options*, no private mortgage insurance, and competitive interest rates. This initiative helps veterans and their families achieve the dream of homeownership, acknowledging their service and sacrifice for the country. It is a key resource for mortgage loans for veterans, including those looking for VA loans in Washington.

Who qualifies for a VA loan?

To qualify for a VA home loan, you must meet certain eligibility requirements related to your service history and duty status. Spouses of deceased Veterans may also be eligible for this benefit.

You may be eligible for a VA loan if:

  • You’ve served at least 90 consecutive days during wartime, or at least 181 days in active service during peacetime, or six years.
  • You’re a member of the National Guard with at least 90 days of active service including at least 30 consecutive days under Title 32, Sections 316, 502, 503, 504 or 505.

Please refer to Eligibility Requirements For VA Home Loan Programs | Veterans Affairs for the most current information.

How do I apply for a VA loan?

A good first step is to begin the process is to contact a mortgage loan officer.

I’ve obtained a VA loan in the past; can I use my VA benefit again?

Yes, contact a WECU VA loan specialist to understand what entitlement options you may have.

What is the minimum credit score requirement for a VA loan?

VA does not set minimum credit score requirements. WECU’s goal is to assist our heroes on their path to homeownership and recommend that you contact a WECU VA loan specialist to schedule a consultation.

Do I need a Certificate of Eligibility (COE) before I start the application process?

No, WECU can partner with you to secure your Certificate of Eligibility (COE), which is an official VA document that confirms your eligibility. If you are concerned about your entitlement amount or prefer having the peace of mind prior to starting your application, you may obtain a copy of your COE from the benefits portal.
