Gabriel Mast, Ph.D., joined the WECU Board of Directors as an Associate Board Member in 2018 and began serving as a Director in 2019. He has held several leadership roles on the WECU Board, including Board Chair, Vice Chair, Nominating Committee Chair, and Board Secretary.
Dr. Mast currently serves as the Vice President for Research and Network Innovation at Achieving the Dream, a national nonprofit supporting a network of over 300 community colleges across the country, where he leads the development and use of evidence across the organization. A recognized leader in community college institutional effectiveness, his research explores how institutional structures and practices shape student success. His dissertation on the organizational factors influencing student success across Washington’s community and technical college system received the Washington Education Research Association Outstanding Dissertation of the Year award and he is a 2025–2026 Aspen Institute Rising Presidents Fellow.
A fourth-generation Washingtonian, Dr. Mast was born and raised in Skagit Valley and began his career teaching English in the Departamento de Lenguas Extranjeras at the Universidad del Quindío in Armenia, Colombia. He currently lives in Bellingham.
