BELLINGHAM (April 7, 2023) — WECU has announced a total donation of more than $106,000 to United Way of Whatcom County. This is the largest donation the credit union has ever made to the nonprofit in a single year.

Most of the funds were raised by WECU employees during the 2022 workplace campaign, with only a small portion coming from the organization itself. Since 1994, WECU has held a yearly workplace campaign to raise money for United Way.

“Our internal campaign looks a little different every year,” said Meagan Southworth, Chair of WECU’s United Way Fundraising Committee. “There’s always an incentivized employee payroll deduction element and a holiday gift basket auction, but we also do other things to bring awareness to and encourage giving.”

This year WECU hosted a garage sale of used and no longer needed office equipment. The sale of office chairs, monitor stands, and garbage bins raised $4,640 for the campaign.

The fundraising committee also hosted a video contest. Employees were encouraged to create silly “Tik Tok like” videos to bring awareness to the campaign. Entries ranged widely from a video featuring employees dressed up like Minions to a “The Office” themed video.

“We know that if we can make fundraising fun, we’re always going to raise more,” said Southworth. “The United Way campaign was great for both company morale and the community.”

Since 1994, WECU has raised more than $1 million dollars in total for United Way of Whatcom County.
