BELLINGHAM (December 20, 2024) — WECU is proud to announce a $50,000 donation to support food banks in Whatcom and Skagit Counties. This contribution comes at a pivotal moment, as food bank usage has increased dramatically in recent years, leaving many organizations with significant funding challenges.
The donation will benefit several vital food programs, including the Bellingham Food Bank, Interfaith Coalition Food Programs, Helping Hands Food Bank, and Tri Parish Food Bank. Across Washington state, food bank visits have increased by 70% since 2021. In Whatcom County, the rise is even more stark, with a 170% surge. The Bellingham Food Bank now serves 9,000 households weekly, reflecting a 200% increase in demand over the past five years.
“We are committed to stepping up when our community needs us most,” said Jennifer Kutcher, President & CEO of WECU. “This donation is made possible by our members, whose trust in banking and borrowing with WECU allows us to give back. We are honored to be a conduit for their positive impact.”
The sharp rise in food bank usage is attributed to the growing cost of rent and soaring grocery prices driven by inflation. These economic pressures have left many local families struggling to make ends meet.
“We are deeply grateful for the support of businesses like WECU,” said Jose Ortiz, an organizer at Tri Parish Food Bank. “Food is a fundamental need, and it takes the entire community working together to ensure no one goes hungry.”
WECU’s contribution underscores its commitment to fostering a thriving and resilient community. As food banks work tirelessly to meet the increasing demand, donations like this help bridge critical gaps and bring hope to those in need.
