Why Credit Unions Are a Popular Choice for Auto Loan Refinancing

Credit unions are member-owned, so products are designed around members – not shareholders. If you’re looking for a credit union for refinancing auto loan debt, WECU offers competitive rates, straightforward terms, and personal support.

When Auto Loan Refinancing Makes Sense

  • Looking for a better auto loan rate? If your current loan has a high annual percentage rate (APR), refinancing with a credit union may help you lower your rate or find a repayment term that better fits your needs. The auto loan rates Washington borrowers qualify for depend on factors including credit history, loan term, amount financed, and vehicle age.
  • Has your credit improved? A stronger credit profile than when you financed your car may help you qualify for a better rate or loan terms.
  • Is your current rate still competitive? A lower Annual Percentage Rate (APR) could reduce the interest you pay over the remaining life of the loan.
  • Does your payment still fit your budget? A different rate or term may make it more manageable, but extending the loan could increase the total interest you pay.
  • Do you want to pay off your car sooner? A shorter loan term may reduce your overall borrowing cost, although it can result in a higher monthly payment.

What to Expect After You Refinance

When you refinance, WECU will provide details about your new loan. After your refinance closes, WECU will pay off your previous lender in as few as 10 days. Keep making payments on your old loan until your previous lender confirms the payoff is complete. Not sure where to start? Book an appointment with us today.

Auto Loan Refinancing FAQs

What is auto refinancing?

Refinancing replaces your current car loan with a new one that may have a different interest rate, monthly payment, or loan term. Once approved and finalized, the new loan pays off your old loan. You then make payments on the new loan.

How do I know if it’s a good time to refinance?

Refinancing may be worth a look if your credit has improved, lower rates are available, or your monthly payment no longer fits your budget.

What influences auto loan refinance rates at a credit union?

Auto loan refinance rates at a credit union can depend on your credit history, loan term, amount financed, and the vehicle’s age and value. When comparing offers, consider the annual percentage rate (APR), monthly payment, fees, and total interest – not just the advertised rate.

Is there a minimum credit score for auto loan refinancing?

Credit score requirements vary with factors such as your income, credit history, loan amount, and vehicle value. Stronger credit may help you qualify for a lower rate, but your score is only one part of the decision.

Is my car too old to refinance?

An older car may still qualify for refinancing. Your options can depend on its age, mileage, value, and how much you still owe. Talk with a Relationship Officer to find out whether your vehicle qualifies.

Could refinancing help me pay off my car sooner?

Yes, choosing a shorter loan term could help you pay off your car faster. A lower rate may also help if you keep paying the same amount each month, since more of your payment can go toward what you owe. A shorter term could raise your monthly payment, so compare the payment and total interest costs before deciding.

What refinancing terms do you offer?

WECU terms depend on loan type, collateral, and applicant qualifications.2 Our Relationship Officers are happy to answer your questions.

If I pay my auto loan off early, is there a prepayment penalty?

Not at WECU. At WECU, you can pay off your auto loan early at any time without any prepayment penalty or fee. Paying early can also save you money on interest, since your interest is calculated on your remaining balance. Check with your current lender to see if they charge a prepayment penalty.

Can I refinance my car loan with an ITIN number?

Yes! We accept Individual Tax Identification Numbers (ITIN) for car loans.

How do I compare rates?

When comparing the best auto loan rates in Washington State, consider the full annual percentage rate, fees, repayment term, and total interest – not only the advertised starting rate.

1. Members will receive 1% cash back on the total new loan amount, up to $500. Cash back will be rounded up to the nearest $5, on the total new loan amount. Cash-back amounts range from $50 to $500 for qualifying car, motorcycle, and RV loans of $5,000 or more. Boat loans, existing WECU loans, and lease buyouts are not eligible. Offer available through 12/31/2026 and subject to change without notice.

2. Information contained in your credit report will be used to qualify you for an offer. An offer is not guaranteed. Loan approval is subject to collateral information, verification of income, debt-to-income ratio, credit information, and application information needed to meet the minimum requirements established for the offer.
