BELLINGHAM, WA (November 12, 2024) – Sedro-Woolley High School has won the 2024 WECU/Cascadia Daily News Game of the Week Student Section Competition. With this win, Sedro-Woolley dethrones the reigning champions, Anacortes High School, who earned second place.

As champions, Sedro-Woolley will receive $1,500 for their ASB fund and the highly coveted WECU Student Section Competition trophy. Anacortes High School will be awarded $500 for their spirited participation.

The competition, held from November 5–15, invited fans to vote on wecu.com/game-of-the-week for the student section that best-embodied school spirit. This year’s event saw an incredible surge in engagement, with votes skyrocketing from 2,700 in 2023 to more than 7,300 in 2024—a testament to the growing enthusiasm and community involvement surrounding this annual celebration of high school pride.

Sedro-Woolley’s standout performance featured a rousing “We believe that we will win” cheer, complemented by synchronized chants, themed outfits, and an array of spirited effects like powder cannons. All the student section videos showcasing the dynamic energy of this year’s competitors are available on WECU’s YouTube channel.

“This competition is a celebration of community, school pride, and the incredible energy our students bring to every game,” said Keith Mader, Director of PR at WECU. “The creativity and passion displayed this year have been nothing short of inspiring, and it’s clear that high school spirit is alive and thriving in our region.”

The 2024 Game of the Week series featured an exciting lineup of matchups:

  • September 6: Lynden at Ferndale
  • September 20: Mount Vernon at Burlington
  • September 27: Lynden at Anacortes
  • October 11: Marysville Getchell at Sedro-Woolley
  • October 18: Sehome at Bellingham
  • October 25: Blaine at Mount Baker
  • November 1: Nooksack at LC

The Student Section Competition started in 2021 with past champions including Anacortes High School (2023), Ferndale High School (2022), and Nooksack Valley High School (2021).
